Today’s quotes and reflection are on feeling Significant.
“A life isn’t significant except for its impact on other lives.”
Jackie Robinson
Jack Ring, one of the long time StarShine supporters, talks about the three things that all people need. They are:
1. The need to be lovable
2. The need to be relevant
3. The need to be significant
“Enthusiasm releases the drive to carry you over obstacles
and adds significance to all you do.”
Norman Vincent Peale
“The most important function of education at any level
is to develop the personality of the individual
and the significance of his life to himself and to others.”
Grayson Kirk
Many students who struggle at schools do not feel significant. I have worked with students who do not feel important or they feel that their lives lack meaning. How do we build the feeling of significance in children?
Here are a couple of ideas:
1. Having responsibility for ones actions builds significance. When students are responsible for caring for a pet or watering the school garden, they begin to feel significant.
2. Having the right attitude builds significance. When teachers, volunteers and mentors demonstrate a positive attitude, they help kids have a positive attitude and the students begin to feel significant.
3. Having faith builds significance. Children supported in school by their teachers and at home by their families have faith, and thus begin to feel significant.
“The significance of life is life itself.” Hermann Keyserling
