We Should All Live By the Golden Rule
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”
This is a famous phrase from the Bible, but it is not in the
Bible in those exact words. Take a look at Luke 6:31 or Matthew 7:12. Almost all
religions have such an expression. There are many versions of the saying, but the important thing;
however, you say it, is to treat other people, as you would like to be treated.
This is Golden Rule week, but I wish we
all could practice it all year round.
Last year, when I started the 3rd through 6th grade girl’s
etiquette club at StarShine Academy, I
suggested to the girls that we use this phrase as a club motto. The girls
liked that idea and we began each meeting that way. They practiced the motto
during our meetings. I didn’t follow them to the playground, but I hoped they
would recall it throughout the day.
I recently heard a discussion on a new movie titled, “Bully.”
It is about the bullying that goes on in schools everyday and the dire
situation the kids being bullied face. Some, in fact, commit suicide rather
than face another day at school.
It breaks my heart to think of kids
being hatefully bullied every time they step out of their home. Maybe it is
because of the way they look or dress or whatever, but there is no excuse for
it. I wish every school was like
StarShine, a school that exemplifies the Golden Rule every single day.
