There are many stories
that could be written about people who every day live inspirational lives.
In my lifetime, I have had the privilege of knowing many of
these people. They live a life of serving those less fortunate. From time to
time, I will introduce you to them. In this post I would like to tell you about
one such married couple who changed their life to make a tremendous social
change.
I met Jim and Donna Piscopo, an attractive and popular young
couple, when I became a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.
St. Barnabas supports a number of outreach ministries. It was
when I introduced StarShine Academy to the parish as their newest ministry, and
consequently became a member of the Ministry Committee, that I met Jim Piscopo.
I was astounded when I heard his story. In 2004, Jim and Donna recognized the
critical need for basic furnishings for families in need. They envisioned a
community resource that serves families by providing a healthy home environment
for children. They acted on this vision with no personal gain for themselves.
They closed their business, and sold their fully paid home to raise the initial
seed money to begin Bridging AZ Furniture.
Bridging AZ Furniture Bank is a non- profit charity dedicated
to outfitting an entire family as they transition from homelessness. Jim and
Donna Piscopo said to the community, “No child within our reach will be
sleeping directly on a floor.” And that is exactly what they have done. Working
with case workers, they now support over one-hundred social service agencies. The
community has recognized Jim, Donna and Bridging AZ Furniture Bank. The Bridging
AZ Furniture Bank was honored by the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce and received
the prestigious Sterling Award.
