May is Older Americans
Month – Never too Old to Play
It seems to me that we should celebrate the wisdom and
strength of older Americans every day and not just one month of the year. Some
of the best volunteers I have had in schools are older Americans. They bring a
sense of wisdom and purpose to volunteering and mentoring. Older Americans connect
with students in a way that younger volunteers cannot. They share stories of
their lives and paint a picture of a world that is no longer here. Just think
about it…what if a World War II veteran or Korean War veteran were to volunteer
in a social studies class. Older Americans are a true asset to our society, and
one that should not be forgotten.
